Abounding in endemic wildlife, especially birds, the reserve is also home to over 50% of Sri Lanka's endemic species of mammals and butterflies, as well as many kinds of insects, reptiles and rare amphibians.

It has been declared as a National Heritage Wilderness Area and is the only natural UNESCO World Heritage Site in the country.

The tea worker community consisting of 37 families, resident on the site, was marginalized, isolated and living in extremely poor conditions at the time the project began. It was imperative that the project initially invest in upgrading their basic facilities while considering a longer term strategy to empower them to access opportunities that would be available once the eco lodge began operations.

The situation of the project site is unique when compared to ecotourism products globally in that there is a resident community on site who are employed full-time on the tea cultivation.
